The Browse Search

Along with the Basic and Advanced Searches (both of which can be done through the search box at the top of the screen), another powerful way of searching the Catholic Portal is the Browse search. You can alphabetically Browse the Portal by:

  • Topic
  • Author
  • Title
  • Call number

The Topic Browse search is the default that will be run unless you indicate otherwise. To run another of the different types of Browse search available, use the pulldown menu in front of the Browse search box. In this example we will show how to do a Topic Browse search.

Getting to the Browse Search

1. First, go to the Advanced Search screen by clicking on the "Advanced" link in the Portal search box at the top of the screen.

2. Once on the Advanced Search screen, scroll all the way to the bottom and click on the "Browse Alphabetically" link.

 Topic Browse

The Topic Browse search requires the use of Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH). To find LCSH, vist the Library of Congress website.

Performing a Topic Browse Search

1. Type your LCSH in the search box. In this example, we will search for the subject heading "Rosary." Then click the Browse button.

 2. You will be taken to all items in the Portal under the subject heading you entered. In the case of our example, the subject "Rosary" will be the first thing in the result list. On the far right of the line (not shown), you will see the number of items under that subject heading.

You will also see that the Browse search result is alphabetically subdivided, to help you get more quickly to the a more specific aspect of your subject.

Click on a subject heading or subdivision to see all the items in the Portal under that heading.
